Jatakarma" or "Namakaranam" is the first important ritual performed for a newborn child after birth. This ritual has a significant impact on the child's life. Therefore, everyone carefully notes the date, time, and birth star (nakshatram) to determine an auspicious moment. Based on the child's birth star, an appropriate muhurtam (auspicious time) is selected for conducting these auspicious ceremonies either at the temple or the family's home.
During "Jatakarma" and "Namakaranam," the child's horoscope is consulted, and a suitable name is chosen. This auspicious event can be performed at either a temple or the family's home. To seek the child's welfare, longevity, and fame, the family seeks the blessings and advice of scholars, relatives, and friends. The naming ceremony involves deciding on the child's month name, star name, and nickname, and then performing a puja to the respective deity associated with that name. This tradition has been followed since ancient times.
